History & Mission

Mission Statement

Good Mews offers an alternative to traditional animal shelters in the Metro Atlanta area by providing a no-kill, cage-free haven for homeless, abused, or abandoned cats until placing them in permanent, loving homes. Good Mews promotes public awareness regarding the value of pets, animal welfare, pet overpopulation, and quality human-animal companionship through education and outreach programs.

About Us

Good Mews is one of the few virtually cage-free, no-kill cat shelters in the State of Georgia.  Since 1988, Good Mews has placed approximately 5,000 cats in permanent homes.  The shelter receives no government support, relying solely on donations of time, service and money from its supporters, the public and area businesses.  Good Mews is home to approximately 100 residents at any given time, most of whom live at the shelter; some also reside in foster care. We have an average adoption rate of approximately 5 cats per week.

Our Cats

Good Mews provides our residents with regular meals and extensive medical care. The only time our cats are caged is for medical observation and a two week quarantine period upon arrival to the shelter. Once a cat has been accepted into the shelter population, it has a home for life. No cat is ever euthanized to make room for another, and is performed ONLY when a veterinarian has diagnosed that the cat’s quality of life is severely and permanently compromised by sickness or injury.

Our cats come to us from a variety of circumstances.  Many of our residents arrive abused, neglected and terribly afraid. Often times, these cats are in urgent need of medical care. During recuperation, our dedicated staff of volunteers spend countless hours cuddling and grooming the cats while they heal so theywill start to trust humans again.

Our Shelter

Good Mews is located in The Fountains at Olde Town shopping center just north of the intersection of Lower Roswell and Johnson Ferry Roads.  The shelter occupies approximately 2,350 square feet.  The combined maximum capacity is 100 cats.  There is designated room with shelves and cat trees just for kittens.  The main shelter is bright and inviting with numerous shelves, cat trees, beds, and even a t.v. and DVD player, which provides entertainment for the residents.

Big windows allow residents a birds-eye view of passer-bys and there is a living room area where potential adopters may spend one-on-one time with residents.  We also have three special needs rooms where cats with special dietary or medical needs can reside comfortably apart from the general shelter population.  In the back of the shelter, there is a kitchen area, an Intake Room with cages to observe new residents during the two week quarantine period, and an Isolation Room with cages where cats with contagious conditions are kept for treatment and observation.

ADOPTED WITH SHERRY!

India and friends lost their home when their guardian had to leave town for a very long extended period of time and he did not have anyone to care for them. He was very sad to have to re-home his cats and we could see how painful it was for him, so we agreed to help. It is always hard to have to leave your furry friends behind but sometimes you have to make decisions that are in the best interest of the cats, and that is what he did. We promised him they were safe with us and we would provide them with all the love and care that he did until new homes could be found.
Right now they are scared and confused and do not understand where they are, which is always the case with cats that come from loving homes. This behavior is nothing new to us and we are prepared. We are going to do all we can to make them feel loved and secure and give them a lot of attention and in no time they will start to feel better. They will soon realize Good Mews is a fun place, not a scary place!
Just by petting and sitting with them, I know they are sweet cats. They are beautiful kitties and I am looking forward to learning more about them. Once I do, I will give updates!

Update-India is a nice girl that loves attention and people. She gets along great with other cats and would make a wonderful companion for any feline lover. We have a lot of black kitties at the shelter right now that are often overlooked. We don’t understand why because black cats are always very affectionate and loyal cats. So if you are looking for a beautiful black beauty to join your family, please come meet India!
